Cruising the Caribbean means the chance to experience some of the wonderful islands. There are many varied cultures to be found here, with different music, cuisine and styles, one thing they all have in common is that they’re all vibrant islands surrounded by the superb warm waters of the Caribbean where there’s plenty of sunshine and fun things to do and see.
Most Cruises that sail to the Caribbean either travel through the west or the eastern islands. There are lots to see in both directions of course. To the west lies the Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico, Jamaica and the Bahamas, while in the east is Barbados, the British and American Virgin islands and Martinique. Every island has something unique and interesting to see, and it’s this variation that makes the Caribbean such a popular choice.
Puerto Rico’s San Juan is one of the busiest ports of the Caribbean and is filled with sights, sounds, people and colour. At the same time the El Junque rainforest is close enough to the port that a day trip is easily possible and here you’ll find a peaceful wildlife full of trees, orchids and giant ferns. The Rio Camuy Cave park is a decent that lets you enjoy the marvels of mysterious cathedral like caverns full of stalactites and stalagmites and mystical underground rivers.
In Martinique you could visit Morne Rouge with its famous MacIntosh plantation where you can explore the fields where bananas, pineapple, avocado and canes grow. The island’s capital of Fort de France is a great place to explore with the Schoelcher Library housed in a building that was built in a mixed style of Romanesque and Byzantine for the Paris Exposition and then shipped here piece by piece afterwards.
Virgin Gorda is the third largest of the British Virgin Islands and the most visited of them too. The unique rock formation of granite boulders and sea pools here is known as ‘the baths’ and is a popular place for snorkelling.
Nelson’s Dockyard in Antigua is a great place to explore, as is the Brimstone Hill Fortress on the island of St Kitts. There are dolphins to swim with in Nassau in the Bahamas, and Stingrays in the waters off Grand Cayman.
Whatever route you take on your cruise through the Caribbean, there is always superb food to enjoy with wonderful spices and rich creamy coconut as well as plenty of freshly caught fish. Add this to the warm sunshine and interesting excursions and you’ve got an experience that few people would fail to enjoy.
